Periodontal Disease
Imagine what would happen if you didn't care for your teeth regularly. The same basics of dental car e also apply to your pet's teeth. Periodontal disease is the most common disease of all dogs and cats, with up to 85% having some form of gum or tooth disease!

 It's Not Just Bad Breath
Foul mouth odor is just one of the symptoms. Your pet may also have red or swollen gums, yellowish-brown crust near the gum line, loose or missing teeth, discomfort or pain when the mouth or gums are touched, and possibly even decreased appetite and/or weight loss due to difficulty chewing. In addition, dental disease may cause chronic infection that spreads to the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys, where even more damage is done.

Is There Anything You can Do?
Of course! Preventing periodontal disease begins at home. Teach your dog and cat to accept frequent brushing, with a toothpaste made especially for pets. Appropriate chew toys and pet dental products (treats, wipes and rinses) can help remove plaque and keep teeth clean.  Ask us about our new line of dental rinse that can be added to pets' drinking water! but sometimes a trip to the veterinarian is necessary for a professional dental exam and prophylactic cleaning.

With Valentine Veterinary Services, your pet will first receive a thorough physical exam.  We then determine and discuss a course of treatment and maintenance for dental health that you can provide at home. If necessary, we can schedule a dental cleaning and any extractions, or advise upon more advanced options such as fillings, root canals, or even implants.  In a hospital dental procedure, the Doctor will administer a safe and effective anesthetic.  Once your pet is happily snoozing, an expertly trained certified veterinary technician will scale, polish and apply fluoride to the teeth. If necessary, dental x-rays are performed to check for pro blems below the gum line, and any loose, rotten or damaged teeth wil l be extracted. Your pet will also receive a nail trim, a good nap, and be ready to go home in a few hours. We'll give you the education and support to get you going on your new mission of KEEPING THOSE TEETH CLEAN!

Why Go Home Alone When Love Is In the Air?
- Broward County "Adopt-a-Sweetheart" Pet Adoption to be Held February 11 -

heart dog.bmpPet lovers can adopt a new lifelong friend at the annual "Adopt-A-Sweetheart" Pet Adoption event at the Broward County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, on Thursday, February 11.  A variety of dogs and cats will be available for adoption in the lobby from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, a variety of baked goods will be on sale. All proceeds will benefit the pets at Broward Text Box: This is only a cute dog photo - this dog is not one that will be up for adoption.County Animal Care and Regulation.
To kick off the event, Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. in the Governmental Center lobby where she will emphasize the importance of adopting a shelter pet. In addition, she will discuss the successful partnership between Broward County Animal Care and local pet rescue organizations.
"For years Broward County Animal Care has partnered with rescue organizations to care for sick or injured pets and to help find a home for our shelter dogs and cats. Through their support and dedication, the County is able to find more homes for more pets, so we encourage all citizens to take the time to adopt a pet and support your local shelter and rescue groups," said Commissioner Lieberman, who is a longtime pet advocate. "Elderly or young, male or female, single or married you're more apt to be healthier and happier if you have a pet to love," she said.
Anyone interested in adopting a pet at the event must complete a short application. The adoption fee is $74.95, cash or credit card, and includes a health exam, sterilization, Broward County pet license, and all necessary vaccinations. Adopters can take their new "sweetheart" home immediately, but must pick up the pet no later than 3 p.m. that day. For more information, call 954-359-1010.

Roll Over Rover Trick Class
Tuesdays at 8 p.m., Starting February 16
What could be more fun for you and your dog? Tricks can convert your dog’s “bad” behavior into more acceptable behavior within a framework of fun, which makes it different from any old obedience training that could accomplish the same thing. The right tricks for your particular dog can use behavior the dog finds rewarding right within the trick itself. Tricks can also be useful when a vet, owner, or groomer needs to examine or handle various parts of your dog. Even clipping toenails can become a routine task rather than a fight to the grim death!
You need no prior dog-training experience. Trick training dogs requires only patience, attention to detail, time, and a love of dogs. Learn how to perform the most basic and simple tricks up to the more complex and advanced ones. Let us show you how to make it happen! This course provides an excellent foundation for learning all aspects of dog tricks and is an ideal course to take either following or alongside the basic dog-training course.
Special: $89 for six weeks

Clicker Training Class
Tuesdays at 7 p.m., Starting February 16

In this five-week program you will learn how to use this amazing dog-training tool that is the clicker. At the end of the program you will know the techniques to have your dog listening to you each and every time you ask him to follow a cue or perform a trick.
Special: $79 for five weeks

Find a Bargain – at a Broward County Park
County parks offer recreation at little or no cost -

Just because the economy is still sluggish doesn’t mean you have to sit at home and mope. Broward County’s network of 18 regional parks and nature centers, six neighborhood parks, and 21 natural areas offers a wide variety of recreational activities at little or no cost to you. Admission is free on weekdays at all regional parks, and on weekends and holidays the regular gate entry fee is only $1.50 per person (children 5 and under free). Reentry on the same day is permitted free if you present your receipt, and you can even use your receipt from one park to enter another park on the same day. There is never an admission charge at our neighborhood parks and natural areas.

Once you’re inside a park, many facilities are available for use free on a first-come, first-served basis. Here’s a sampling of what you can do for little or no money:

•           Find Fitness – Free use of the basketball courts is available at these parks: Brian Piccolo in Cooper City, C.B. Smith in Pembroke Pines, Central Broward Regional in Lauderhill, and T.Y. and West Lake in Hollywood.

•           Find Focus – You can play disc golf for free at either Easterlin Park in Oakland Park or Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. If you don’t already have your own discs, you can purchase them at a minimal cost, and then they’re yours to keep.

•           Find Fresh Air – There’s no cost to use the jogging or walking paths at the following parks: Brian Piccolo in Cooper City, C.B. Smith in Pembroke Pines, Central Broward Regional in Lauderhill, Hollywood North Beach in Hollywood, Markham in Sunrise, Plantation Heritage in Plantation, Quiet Waters in Deerfield Beach, and T.Y. and West Lake in Hollywood.

•           Find Nature – Experience the natural beauty of South Florida for free along the nature trails of these parks and nature centers: Anne Kolb in Hollywood, Central Broward Regional in Lauderhill, Deerfield Island in Deerfield Beach, Easterlin in Oakland Park, Fern Forest in Coconut Creek, Long Key in Davie, Markham in Sunrise, Plantation Heritage in Plantation, Secret Woods in Dania Beach, Tradewinds in Coconut Creek, Tree Tops in Davie, and West Lake in Hollywood. These natural areas are also free and accessible without reservations: Crystal Lake in Pompano Beach, Helene Klein in Coconut Creek, Highlands Scrub in Pompano Beach, Hillsboro Pineland in Coconut Creek, Pine Island Ridge in Davie, Snake Warrior’s Island in Miramar, Tall Cypress in Coral Springs, and Woodmont in Tamarac.

•           Find the Heavens Above – On Saturday evenings at dusk, the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association opens the Fox Observatory at Markham Park in Sunrise – and it’s free.

•           Find Agility – The racquetball/handball courts are available for free at C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, Markham Park in Sunrise, and West Lake Park in Hollywood.

•           Find Your Competitive Edge – You can play tennis for free on the courts at these four parks: Central Broward Regional in Lauderhill, Markham in Sunrise, and T.Y. and West Lake in Hollywood.

•           Find Your Team Spirit – You’ll have to bring your own ball, but you can play volleyball for free at these parks: Brian Piccolo in Cooper City, C.B. Smith in Pembroke Pines, Deerfield Island in Deerfield Beach, Easterlin in Oakland Park, Hollywood North Beach in Hollywood, Markham in Sunrise, Plantation Heritage Park in Plantation, Quiet Waters in Deerfield Beach, Tradewinds in Coconut Creek, Tree Tops in Davie, and T.Y. and West Lake in Hollywood.

•           Find Companionship – Dogs and their owners are welcome at no charge at Barkham at Markham, the dog park at Markham Park in Sunrise. And remember, you can bring your dog to any Broward County regional park – provided it’s on a leash no more than six feet in length.

•           Find Fish – Bring your fishing pole (and a state license if you’re between 16 and 65) and fish at most of our parks that have bodies of water, including Brian Piccolo in Cooper City, Deerfield Island in Deerfield Beach, Hollywood North Beach in Hollywood, Markham in Sunrise, Plantation Heritage in Plantation, Reverend Samuel Delevoe in Fort Lauderdale, Tradewinds in Coconut Creek, Tree Tops in Davie, and T.Y. and West Lake in Hollywood.

•           Find Family Fun – There’s never a charge to use any of the freestanding picnic tables located throughout any of our regional and neighborhood parks, available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Picnic tables in shelters require fees, deposits, and reservations.)

Find It All – At a Broward County Park. For further information, call or visit the park of your choice.

Oh Behave Dog Trainer Looking for Your Support!

Dawn.JPGMany of you know that for me, the "good stuff" in my life includes helping animal welfare organizations through financial support and volunteer work. I am hoping that I can count on you to support me for the 2010 Walk for the Animals to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County.  So many of you have supported me generously in the past and I am so grateful.  With the overwhelming support Maddie and I received last year, we were able to exceed our goal of $1,000.  We appreciate donations of any size.  I have been bragging all year that our "PACK" came in first place for fundraising in 2009.  Thanks to the generosity of many animal lovers, this was not an easy task.  Our pack raised over $32,000 to help animals in Broward County.  In addition to placing over 9,500 animals each year into loving homes, the Humane Society of Broward County also provides animal education, cruelty investigations, an animal assisted therapy program and low cost spay and neuter services.

It's easy to help... just follow the link http://www.firstgiving.com/ohbehave
If it's easier to donate by check, let me know  and I'll make arrangements to get it from you to the animals in need.  Please make it payable to the Humane Society of Broward County.

Thank you so much!   Dawn Hanna, CPDT  -- Oh Behave™ Dog Training – 954-587-2711
